10 Uses for Lavender Essential Oil

Lavender is one of my favorite essential oils, next to lemon and peppermint. It’s one of the oils that I reach for on a daily basis. At times though, I find myself asking the question “Why?”. Why are essential oils good for me? Why are they a better alternative to modern medicine? You may find yourself in the same boat if you’re just starting out with essential oils. Luckily, my good friend DaNelle from Weed ‘em and Reap has a Free Online Essential Oils Class that is super helpful and a great way to learn the Why’s of essential oils. I really suggest checking that out because I have found it to be such a useful resource.

What are Essential Oils?

Essential oils are natural aromatic compounds found in the seeds, bark, stems, roots, flowers, and other parts of plants. They can be both beautifully and powerfully fragrant. If you have ever walked by a field of lavender, or smelled fresh cut mint, you have experienced the aromatic qualities of essential oils. In addition to aromatic qualities, essential oils have many natural properties that can benefit the body in many different ways.

Essential oils are non water-based phytochemicals made up of aromatic compounds. Essential oils are very clean, almost crisp, to the touch and are immediately absorbed by the skin. Pure, unadulterated essential oils are translucent and range in color from crystal clear to deep blue.

Known for its many calming properties, Lavender is the most widely used essential oil in the world. Lavender essential oil has been cherished for thousands of years for its unmistakable aroma and therapeutic properties. I like to add Lavender to homemade play dough to calm a agitated child. It’s a great way for your child to get aromatherapy benefits while being creative and playing.

10 Uses for Lavender Essential Oil:

1) Apply to the bottom of feet or on a pillow before sleeping

I have found this to be so helpful when I’m having a hard time falling asleep or when my brain is going 500 miles an hour. I actually have added this to my nightly routine because I’ve found it so helpful.

2) Use to soothe reactions to bee stings or bug bites

The mosquitoes get so bad around where I live because it rains practically every day. I love being able to use one drop to soothe 4-5 bites. Is that awesome or what?

3) Use with bath salts for a relaxing spa bathing experience

If you do near as much garden work as I do, you could reaaally use a foot soak. I like to add a 7 to 8 drops of lavender essential oil to a basin of hot water and bath salts for a ridiculously relaxing spa experience.

4) Apply to wrists or inhale when traveling to ease motion sickness

There is hardly anyone in my family who doesn’t get motion sickness during a car ride. It’s awful. However, I’ve found that just putting a drop on your wrist or taking a deep breath of Lavender makes it all better. It makes car rides so much more peaceful and enjoyable.

5) Lightly apply to soothe sunburned skin

I swear—even when I put on sunscreen I still manage to get burned. And I like to go swimming a lot during the summer, so my skin goes through a lot of damage. I am so grateful that soothing the sunburns is as easy as applying a drop or tow to a burned area of my skin.

6) Apply to back, hands, or feet of a restless or agitated child

If you’ve got a child at home who has a hard time winding down before nap time or bedtime, Lavender is perfect for calming them down. This is one of the main reasons why I love Lavender so much!

7) Use to calm and soothe diaper rash

Baby skin is so sensitive, so keep your baby comfortable by applying Lavender to where their diapers rub the most. You may want to dilute it with fractionated coconut oil first because babies have such sensitive skin.

8) Calm sensitive skin and soothe pores after shaving

I know from experience how much your legs can hurt after shaving. For the longest time shaving was a drag, but once I started applying Lavender to my legs before and after shaving, the pain never came and shaving was no longer dreaded.

9) Apply to chapped lips before putting on lip balm

For whatever reason, my lips are always chapped, but this really makes a difference for me. Not only does it moisturize my lips but the Lavender itself can help you achieve smooth lips.

10) Add to lotion for a stress-relieving massage

Stress is a major problem in America today. I am always feeling stressed out about something, but a little massage with lotion and Lavender can really help my stress subside and help me relax.
