Xiomega Chia Water Review | Natural Chow

So, it’s pretty clear that I’m obsessed with chia seeds. Like painfully obvious. But, many of my family members—and probably many of you—can’t get past that chia seed texture. I’ve had people tell me that the texture is pretty similar to alien eggs.

And while I admit the texture is a bit different, there are so many health benefits to chia seeds that you don’t want to miss out on.

Chia seeds contain loads of omega-3’s, which helps the brain and heart, is a source of antioxidants that are considered the new fountain of youth.

Because there are so many people out there that can’t stand the texture but want the health benefits of chia seeds, I am pleased to let you know that Chia Water is the answer.

I was so happy when Xiomega (pronounced “CHEE-OMEGA”) sent me four flavors of Chia Water to try out. It was all I could do to not guzzle all of them down at once. So I paced myself and tried one new flavor a day.

Here’s what I thought about each flavor:

LEMON TEA CHIA WATER:

I really liked this flavor. It was refreshing, tasted like sweet tea with a hint of lemon, and really delicious. I was a little leery of this one because it was brown in color, so I decided to try it first. <– best decision ever.

MIXED BERRY CHIA WATER:

I’ve always been a huge fan of berries, so I knew I would love this flavor. I could really single out the tangy raspberry flavor, though. I like that this flavor has as much fiber as an apple!

MANGO PASSION CHIA WATER:

This one was light yellow/orange in color, and bright, refreshing, and bold in flavor. Like, it was like I had just taken a bite of the most flavorful mango in the world. It was that good. I’ve never tried passion fruit before, but I know it’s got some serious health benefits! Definitely love love love this flavor.

LEMON LIME CHIA WATER:

I think this one was my favorite out of all of the flavors. I could definitely taste more lemon than lime, but it smelled and tasted amazing! If you like lemon lime soda, than you’ll love this healthy alternative.

I also wanted to share with you what I didn’t like about these drinks. I still think they are amazing drinks, but here are my caveats about these products.

First off, the sweetener. Agave. I personally don’t agree with using agave nectar after reading this article.

Second, there were a lot of questionable ingredients in these drinks. While some of these might not be completely bad for you, I certainly wouldn’t feel comfortable eating a spoonful of many of these ingredients: maltodextrin, gum acacia, natural flavors, calcium lactate, cyanocobalamin, pyridoxine hydrochloride. Whew. Try pronouncing those last two. Oh wait. Mission impossible.

After a little research, I learned that Cyanocobalamin is a Vitamin B-12 supplement, so it was added to these drinks for a boost of vitamin B-12. Case closed.

And it turns out that Pyridoxine Hydrochloride is a Vitamin B-6 supplement. So maybe I shouldn’t have been so quick to judge those two ingredients.

Gum acacia turns out to be an emulsifying agent, stabilizer, adhesive, flavor fixative and inhibitor of sugar crystallization. I can understand why it would be added to the drinks, but it’s still an ingredient I try to steer clear from.

Maltodextrin is an artificial sugar that has a mild, sweet taste. Maltodextrin is also known as a polysaccharide and manufacturers create this artificial sugar by applying acids or other enzymes to cornstarch. (source)

Well, I don’t want to go on for forever waving my finger at you telling what’s good and what’s bad for you. I personally would recommend these drinks to anyone trying to improve their health and still get the benefits of chia seeds if they don’t like the texture of chia seeds.

The lemon lime or the mixed berry would probably be my favorite. I’ve never tried them and I’m glad you showed me how to pronounce Xiomega. I like the addition of the vitamin B12 and B6. Looking forward to trying them.

i am OBSESSED beyond measure with Chia seeds. I put 2 TBS in 20 ounces of water first thing in the morning and in the evening. Those beverages sound good but I’m not a fan of all those additives. Perhaps I’ll try one one day just to see.

Haha, I’m chia-obsessed as well! I’ve never tried taking it in water, but that’s a great idea! And the drinks DID taste delicious, but like you said, all those additives are a bit much in my opinion. Thanks Yvonne!
