10 Uses for Peppermint Essential Oil

I have so much to be thankful for. But I am especially thankful for essential oils and their many uses, because they have not only changed my life but also my family’s lives. My mother who has lower back problems sits in a chair all day at work in excruciating pain.

But by simply rubbing a few drops of peppermint essential oil directly on her lower back morning and night, we’ve been able to reduce her back pain a great deal. Essential oils have made such an impact on us and I begin to wonder why more people don’t turn to essential oils for everyday ailments.

What are Essential Oils?

Essential oils are natural aromatic compounds found in the seeds, bark, stems, roots, flowers, and other parts of plants. They can be both beautifully and powerfully fragrant. If you have ever walked by a field of lavender, or smelled fresh cut mint, you have experienced the aromatic qualities of essential oils. In addition to aromatic qualities, essential oils have many natural properties that can benefit the body in many different ways.

Essential oils are non water-based phytochemicals made up of aromatic compounds. Essential oils are very clean, almost crisp, to the touch and are immediately absorbed by the skin. Pure, unadulterated essential oils are translucent and range in color from crystal clear to deep blue.

I only use and recommend certified therapeutic essential oils.

Please note: Peppermint is considered a “hot” oil, so it should be diluted in fractionated coconut oil (or another carrier oil) before applying to children or people with sensitive skin.

10 Uses for Peppermint Essential Oil:

1) Rub on stomach or feet, or take one drop internally to calm indigestion or upset stomach

I can only recommend pure essential oils for internal use, but I have found this to be very helpful in calming an upset stomach.

2) Use with Lemon in water for a healthy refreshing mouth rinse

I do this every morning instead of using mouthwash and it is SUPER refreshing. No more morning breath.

3) Diffuse aromatically or apply topically to open sinuses and airways

My little brother is allergic to cats, and what to you know, we have cats. He use to take Zyrtec every night before bed and it hardly did a thing for him, but now my brother can breathe again.

4) Apply with Lavender to sore, tired muscles and joints

After a long day in the garden, it’s great to come inside, apply a few oils, and feel better in a matter of minutes. My mother has found this to really work for her.

5) Inhale during a meal to help you feel full

Peppermint is great for aiding in digestion and helping you to feel full. Sometimes, I eat dinner and I’m still pretty hungry even though I ate a whole chicken breast, some mashed potatoes, and sauteed green beans (YUM!). All it takes is breathing in some Peppermint and I feel full almost instantly.

6) Spritz on a child’s shirt before study time for alertness

I know how hard it is to stay on task—my mind is in a million places at once at any given moment. But Peppermint helps me so much to stay alert and focused on the task at hand.

7) Add a drop of Lemon and Peppermint to your toothbrush after use

I like to keep back germs on my toothbrush. I also like the health benefits I get from applying the essential oils to my mouth every morning and night. Again, it gets rid of toxins, bad breath, and can aid in digestion.

8) Add to shampoo and conditioner for a stimulating hair and scalp massage

Peppermint has cooling effects, so it feels AMAZING on the scalp. Don’t use if you have cuts or scratches on your head, as this can irritate is a little bit.

9) Use with Lavender and Lemon during allergy season

Pollen kicks by patootie in the spring and fall, and nothing I’ve tried works better than Lemon, Lavender, and Peppermint diffused or applied topically.

10) Inhale as a non-stimulant, invigorating pick-me-up on long drives

On long driving trips, I feel the urge to pull over and take an hour nap, but Peppermint helps keep me awake and alert on the road.
